Who treats orthodontic patients at MDS Dental?
All orthodontic treatment is planned and carried out by Dr. Mukund D. Sawant, MDS (Orthodontics) from PGIMER Chandigarh, All India Rank 1, with residency at AIIMS New Delhi.
What sterilisation protocols do you follow?
We have a separate sterilisation room with an autoclave, and instruments are sealed in individual pouches for each patient.
Do you treat both children and adults?
Yes. We see children from their first dental visit, recommend an orthodontic check by age 7, and treat adults of all ages including braces and aligners.
Can adults get braces?
Yes. There is no upper age limit as long as the gums and bone are healthy. Many adults choose clear aligners or ceramic braces.
What types of braces are available?
Self-ligating metal braces, ceramic braces and clear aligners, often combined with skeletal anchorage or expansion where needed.
How often are braces appointments?
Usually every 6 to 10 weeks. Regular review by the same orthodontist is important to keep treatment on track.
How much does treatment cost at MDS Dental?
The consultation (OPD) fee is ₹200. Starting prices: self-ligating braces from ₹45,000, clear aligners from ₹80,000, impacted canine treatment from ₹55,000, dental implants from ₹30,000 including the crown, root canal treatment from ₹4,000 and zirconia crowns from ₹8,000. The exact fee depends on your case and is explained in writing after examination, and EMI plans are available.
Do you offer payment plans for orthodontic and implant treatment?
Yes. EMI plans are available for orthodontic and implant treatment. Fees and the payment schedule are explained in writing before treatment starts.
What technology do you use?
Digital intraoral scanning, low-radiation digital X-rays (Vatech RVG), CBCT-guided implant planning, rotary root canal systems and rubber dam isolation.
Orthodontics
What is the best age for an orthodontic check?
By age 7. Most children will not need treatment yet, but problems like crossbites, underbites and impacted canines are easier to manage when caught early.
Braces or aligners: which is better?
Both work well when planned by an orthodontist. Braces are fixed and handle any movement; aligners are removable and discreet but need 22 hours of daily wear. We recommend based on your teeth, bite and lifestyle.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Simple cases can finish in 6 to 12 months; most comprehensive cases take 12 to 24 months; complex cases such as impacted canines may take longer.
Do I need teeth removed for braces?
Not always. Expansion, skeletal anchorage and careful planning can avoid extractions in many cases. Sometimes extractions give the most stable and attractive result, and we will explain why.
Impacted canines
Is treatment for an impacted canine painful?
The exposure is done under local anaesthesia. Afterwards there is mild soreness for a few days, similar to the first week of braces.
Can adults have an impacted canine brought down?
Often yes, though success is higher at a younger age. In adults we assess the tooth on CBCT and discuss whether traction, or an alternative like an implant, is the better option.
How long does it take to bring an impacted canine into place?
Traction itself often takes 6 to 12 months, and the full orthodontic treatment usually takes 18 to 30 months depending on the depth and angle of the tooth.
Skeletal anchorage (SAS)
Are orthodontic mini-screws painful?
Placement is done under local anaesthesia and most patients feel only pressure. Mild tenderness for a day or two is common.
Are mini-implants the same as dental implants?
No. Orthodontic mini-screws are much smaller, are used only temporarily as anchors, and are removed after treatment. Dental implants replace missing teeth permanently.
Can skeletal anchorage help me avoid extractions?
In some cases, yes. By moving molars back, mini-screws can create space that would otherwise need extractions. Dr. Mukund will tell you honestly if your case suits this.
Rapid maxillary expansion (RME)
Does a palatal expander hurt?
Children usually feel pressure on the nose and teeth for a few minutes after each turn. It settles quickly.
Why did a gap appear between my child's front teeth?
The gap shows the two halves of the upper jaw are separating as planned. It typically closes by itself over the following weeks.
Is early expansion better than waiting?
For true skeletal crossbites, treating while the child is still growing is simpler and more stable. An orthodontic check by age 7 to 9 helps catch it early.
Fixed functional appliances
Can a fixed functional appliance change the face profile?
In growing patients it can improve the relationship of the jaws and the chin position. The amount varies with growth, which is why timing is assessed carefully.
Is it comfortable?
There is an adjustment period of a week or two for chewing and cheek comfort. Most teens adapt quickly.
What if growth is already complete?
For adults, options include camouflage with skeletal anchorage or, for severe cases, combined orthodontic and jaw surgery.
Orthopedic growth modification
What is the right age for a face mask?
Usually between 7 and 10 years, while the upper jaw sutures respond well to forward pull.
Will my child still need braces later?
Often a shorter second phase of braces is needed once permanent teeth erupt, to finish alignment.
Can orthopedic treatment avoid jaw surgery?
In many mild to moderate skeletal problems, early treatment can reduce or avoid the need for surgery. Severe or genetic cases may still need it after growth.
Clear aligners
Is Invisalign available at MDS Dental?
Yes. We offer orthodontist-led clear aligner treatment, including Invisalign, planned and supervised by Dr. Mukund Sawant.
Are aligners as effective as braces?
For many cases, yes, when planned by an orthodontist and worn as advised. Certain complex movements are more reliable with braces or with aligners plus skeletal anchorage.
Can I eat with aligners?
Take them out to eat and drink anything other than water, then brush and put them back in.
Self-ligating braces
Are self-ligating braces faster?
They can make adjustments more efficient, but total treatment time depends mostly on the complexity of the case and on attendance.
Do you offer ceramic braces?
Yes, tooth-coloured ceramic self-ligating brackets are available for a more discreet look.
What should I avoid eating with braces?
Hard, sticky and very chewy foods such as nuts, toffees and hard bread crusts. Cut fruit into small pieces.
Dental implants
Why do you use CBCT before placing an implant?
A 2D X-ray cannot show bone width or the exact path of the nerve. CBCT gives a 3D view, so the implant size, depth and angle can be planned safely and the crown can sit in the ideal position.
How long does a dental implant take?
Typically 3 to 6 months from placement to final crown, while the implant bonds with the bone. In suitable cases a temporary tooth can be fitted sooner.
Is implant surgery painful?
It is done under local anaesthesia. Most patients describe it as easier than an extraction, with mild soreness for a few days.
Can I get fixed teeth if I have no teeth at all?
Yes. A full-mouth implant-supported prosthesis replaces a whole arch with fixed teeth on a small number of implants, planned on CBCT.
Is the implant available immediately or does it need to be ordered?
We will confirm the system and timeline at your planning visit; your treatment plan and costs are shared before anything begins.
General dentistry
Is root canal treatment painful?
With good anaesthesia and modern rotary instruments, root canal treatment feels much like a filling. It relieves the pain caused by the infection.
Why use a rubber dam for root canals?
A rubber dam isolates the tooth from saliva and bacteria and protects the airway, which improves the success of the treatment.
Are zirconia crowns better than metal-ceramic?
Zirconia is very strong, metal-free and looks natural, with no grey line at the gum. It suits most back and many front teeth.
Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed?
No. We remove them when they are impacted, decayed, causing infections or damaging the neighbouring tooth.
